1 Bligh Street is an oval shaped building which was designed to qualify for a Green Star Rating. This rating meant that much of the area around the BMU was allocated to solar panels thereby limiting the space available to the BMU. To help achieve the Green Star Rating the steel used in the BMU was made using the highest percentage of recycled steel available.
The BMU consists of a 4 stage telescoping jib fixed atop a 2 stage continuously slewing vertically telescoping pedestal. The continuous slewing feature is accommodated using a circular busbar system at the base of the pedestal. The 34.5m reach from slew centre is also one of the longest in Australia. When not in use the jib and pedestal retract to park the BMU to minimise visual impact.
