CoxGomyl provides concealed facade access solution for 180 George St, Sydney.

Located just moments from Circular Quay, 180 George Street is Sydney’s largest office building, providing incredible views across the iconic harbour. The lead architects on the project, Foster + Partners, designed the building to be highly functional, with intelligent floorplate designs and technology used throughout.

The commercial building comprises 56 floors, which reach to an impressive height of 213 metres. Such a large-scale building comes with many unique requirements, which is why the architects reached out to CoxGomyl to design a suitable facade access solutions to maintain the building’s facade.

The CoxGomyl team began working on the development in September 2020 and devised a solution which consisted of two CoxGomyl 5000 Series building maintenance units (BMUs) as well as a custom folding deck floor to conceal the BMU tracks.

The 5000 Series range of building maintenance units are designed for use on buildings of moderate complexity. In addition to the supplied BMUs, CoxGomyl also provided a cantilevered jib crane to replace the transformer in the plant room.

Located on level 51, the folding floor is hydraulically controlled, concealing the building maintenance unit tracks when the building maintenance unit is not in use. This means the terrace is still accessible to the public so that they can enjoy the exceptional views overlooking Sydney Harbour.

The project team did have to overcome some challenges along the way. The existing BMU on Level 56 had to be redesigned to allow access to the extended podium from Level 5 down. Additionally, the material handling unit had to be designed to fit within limited space on Level 24. Ultimately, the CoxGomyl team worked hard to ensure that the project was completed to the client’s standards and on time.

The two new building maintenance units at 180 George St provides the facilities management team with an access solution that provides comprehensive coverage for the maintenance of the facade, including cleaning and glass replacement.
